Performs various duties as transcriptionist and secretary in the
pathology office. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner
consistent with our mission and values. Principle Accountabilities:

Safety/Risk Management: Maintains an environment for employees,
patients, medical staff, and visitors that promote safety
consciousness in order to achieve a safe physical environment.
Complies with Infection Control guidelines. Adheres to chemical
hygiene policies. Follows confidentiality policy/procedure. Adheres
to hospital wide and department specific safety regulations. Writes
QI reports as necessary. Creates a safe and clean work environment.
Coordination of Services: Coordinates activities, which allow
quality work within a timely manner. Functions efficiently and
effectively in pertinent areas during normal operations and
computer 'downtimes.' Orders supplies in a timely manner to insure
continuous service. Coordinates services and resources with
laboratory and non-laboratory personnel (i.e., unlabeled/
mislabeled specimens, supplies). Participate in training new
employees and other trainees (i.e., blitz, new employee). Receives,
labels and stores supplies accurately and in a timely manner.
Primary Aspects of the Job: Exhibits organizational skills and a
conscientiousness which allows for precise and accurate results in
a timely manner. Performs various types of HIS/LIS registration on
patients and /or specimens. Answer telephone in a friendly manner
to include: Routing calls to proper location; Taking messages when
needed; Answering questions; Making appointments; Giving verbal
results; Give accurate instructions (by phone or in person) to
patients or physician office personnel regarding pathologic
diagnosis, obtaining copies of pathologic reports; histology slides
for review, etc. Performs various clerical duties to include but
not limited to: Sending out reports; Typing as necessary; Faxing
reports; and Filing. Accurately and promptly transcribes and
distributes Pathology reports as dictated by the Pathologist in
accordance with Pathology procedures. Accurately and promptly types
Pathology and Laboratory reports and correspondence. Must be able
to consistently organize this function within the daily workflow.
Charging/crediting laboratory test to the patient account must be
performed daily and consistently in accordance with procedures.
Compiles and distributes data for different committees or special
projects efficiently within 1 day notice. Must be able to
consistently organize this function within the daily workflow.
Reviews appropriate technical and/or operational procedures
Communication Management: maintains good quality relations
between staff, patients, physicians and other departments to
promote a good working environment. Handles inquiries regarding
procedures and test results. Dispatch pathology reports and
pathologic slides and specimens to various hospitals and doctors as
needed or upon request. Communicates test results appropriately,
accurately and in a timely manner and documents communication as
required. Remains current with departmental meeting minutes and
other required reading. Trains co-workers and non-laboratory
personnel. Performs various computer duties to include: Report
generation and distribution; Maintenance of printers; Generation of
computer error reports; Generation of computer credits. (20%)
- Technology: Maintains equipment in order to provide a
continuous level of quality in test results. Reports instrument
malfunctions and performs minor repairs. Maintains a working
knowledge of laboratory computer functions to insure accurate data
management. Maintains a working knowledge of the hospital computer
functions to include charges and credits, if applicable. Maintains
a working knowledge of personal computer, if applicable. Attends
in-service training on new equipment and procedures (i.e., WinNet).
Remains current in Laboratory developments though participation in
continuing education and self-study (5 hours per year). Performs
other work duties as assigned. (10%) Total 100%
High school diploma or equivalent required
One year laboratory experience preferred with clerical/computer
skills Proficient in the use of word-processing of 50 WPM
Proficient in the knowledge of medical terminology and ability to
expand this knowledge with pathology terminology The assessment,
care and treatment provided by the Laboratory will be consistent
with the specific age related needs of the patient. The Laboratory
divisions are competent to provide patient care to
neonates/infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatrics.
Employee is required to sit, stand and walk frequently. Employee
must lift/carry light (20# max) occasionally. Employee is required
to bend, squat, climb, lift floor to waist and lift waist to
overhead occasionally; reach forward and reach overhead frequently.
For repetitive action, employee is required to use both hands for
simple grasping, pushing/pulling and fine manipulation. Employee is
exposed to temperature changes (heat, cold, wet, damp) and
electrical hazards occasionally; noise, and fumes occasionally.
Employee is occasionally exposed to blood borne pathogens.

The most significant of duties are included but this does not
exclude occasional work assignments not mentioned or developmental
