Job Description:

$5000 sign on bonus for Perfusionist with at least 5 years of experience.

Under the general supervision of the Chief Perfusionist and under the direction of a physician, the perfusionist is responsible for operating and monitoring cardiopulmonary bypass, various life support and laboratory equipment during treatment of the critically ill patient. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission and values.


Principle Accountabilities:


1.  Maintenance of all perfusion and perfusion specific monitoring equipment. (10%)

2.  Preparation, operation and monitoring of cardiopulmonary bypass cell salvaging, monitoring and various life support equipment (intra-aortic balloon pumps {IABP}, ventricular assist devices {VAD}, extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation circuits {ECMO}), in the operating room and/or intensive care unit. (70%)

3.  Maintenance and operation of laboratory equipment including blood gas/electrolyte analyzers, glucose monitors, coagulation monitoring devices and hemoglobin/hematocrit analyzers. (5%) 

4.  Interpretation and application of data from various laboratory equipment listed above.  (5%)

5.  Maintains adequate and complete medical records for medical and/or legal data assembly.  (4%)

6.  Provision of periodic lectures to students and staff on perfusion related topics.  (1%)

7.  Involvement in continuing education opportunities necessary for maintaining adequate and up-to-date knowledge base in perfusion systems, instrumentation, pathology, physiology, anatomy, pharmacology and perfusion technique and to maintain certification status.  (3%)


8.   Ascertains the utility/applicability of new techniques and equipment and assists in the thorough testing and analysis of such techniques and equipment prior to clinical use.   (1%)

9.  Gathers data on cardiopulmonary bypass patients for allied projects of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and performs other work duties as assigned.  (1%)    


Total: 100%


Bachelor’s degree in science or health care related field (Preferred).

Certified or certification eligible by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.

Licensed by the State of Missouri in the practice of clinical perfusion. 

Previous experience as a clinical perfusionist is desirable.


The assessment, care and treatment provided by the perfusionist will be consistent with the specific age related needs of the patient.  The perfusionist is competent to care for patient age groups including the adult cardiothoracic patient.


Employee is required to sit continuously and walk occasionally. Employee must lift/carry a light load (1-20 lbs.) frequently, medium (21-50 lbs.) and heavy (50 lbs. +) load occasionally. Employee may be required to lift over 100 lbs. with assistance occasionally. Employee is frequently required to bend, squat, and kneel and lift waist to overhead frequently. Employee is continuously required to reach forward and reach overhead. For repetitive action, employee is required to use both hands for simple grasping and pushing/pulling. Employee is occasionally exposed to electrical hazards, radiation, fumes and CRT terminal work frequently.

The most significant of duties are included but this does not exclude occasional work assignments not mentioned or developmental duties.  


Job Relationships:


Member of a comprehensive healthcare team that interacts regularly with other healthcare providers, patients, physicians and ancillary personnel.


Takes direction from: Senior Perfusionist, Cardiothoracic Surgeons, and Cardiac Anesthesiologists

Provides direction to: N/A

Supervised by: Chief Perfusionist and Vice President of Surgical Services
