fast-paced, 21-bed progressive care unit specializing in stroke,
brain injury, seizures, and post-neurosurgical patients. Located in
the Plaza Tower, this unit bridges ICU and general care, offering
continuous telemetry and advanced neuro monitoring. Nurses here
work closely with neurologists and a full interdisciplinary team,
with strong support from leadership and a dedicated nurse educator.

description. Overview Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington

School of Medicine, supported by a house staff of residents,

the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The Neuroscience
Progressive Care Unit (PCU) is a 21 bed unit dedicated to the care
of patients in need of specialized nursing care at a critical point
in their healthcare journey, where they are at high risk for
clinical deterioration. Progressive care, with lower nurse patient
ratios, allows for frequent assessment, intervention, treatment and
specialized monitoring. The unit cares for pre and postoperative
neurosurgical, neuro-medicine and stroke patients with complex
needs using a team approach with nurses, charge nurse and patient
care techs. Bedside, central monitoring, and remote telemetry are
standard for all PCU patients. Many resources are available to
nurses on this unit, including: Nurse Practitioners, Nurse
Mananger, Assistant Nurse Managers and a Nurse Educator.
Additionally this nursing team collaborates with and are supported
by a wide array of the multidisciplinary providers, physicians and
pharmacists. A specialized orientation is provided to prepare
nurses to care for the neuroscience patient as well as training
specific to Progressive Care. Ongoing education and professional
development is supported and encouraged. Attention to nursing
patients with the provision of excellent outcomes is what drives
the work on this unit. Preferred Qualifications Role Purpose
Provides direct patient care activities including assessment,
diagnosis, planning implementation, and evaluation within the
guidelines of the standards of nursing care. Responsibilities -
Promotes patient and family centered care in a healing environment.
Educates patients and their families on how to manage their illness
or injury, including post treatment home care needs and medication
administration. - Participates in activities that promote patient
safety, quality and regulatory compliance. Participates in
professional development. - Develops, implements, and documents
individual plans of care with defined goals in collaboration with
other members of the interprofessional team and patient, family or
caregiver in accordance with the established guidelines and
standards of nursing care. Proactively plans and ensures
communication of the plan of care across the continuum of care. -
Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate physical,
psychosocial, and emotional needs according to standards of care.
Assess patient preferences and barriers to involvement in care,
including their values, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and
population-specific needs. - BJC has determined this is a
